If you will be in Jamaica for a month or more, long term car rental in Jamaica is a different decision from renting for a long weekend. Maybe you are visiting family for the whole summer, starting a work assignment or settling back in as a returning resident. Taxis and airport transfers will cover the first day, but they will not cover the school pickup, the supermarket run or the drive to a Saturday gathering three parishes away. At that point a car for the whole stay starts to make sense, and so do some questions that a short rental never raises. How does an extension work, what happens when the car needs servicing, and does your licence stay valid for the entire stay? This post goes through the terms that matter when a rental runs for weeks rather than days.

Why A Month-Long Stay Changes The Car-Rental Decision

A rental for a few days is mostly about price and pickup. A rental for a month or more also becomes a matter of how well the car will serve you for weeks of ordinary life. You will need it for repeated daily use, so servicing, breakdown help, mileage and the terms for extending all matter in a way they never would on a short trip.

It also pays to ask first whether a self-drive rental is the right shape at all. Self-drive can be useful when you want independence, expect frequent trips and are comfortable driving on the left. Jamaica Tourist Board guidance describes rental vehicles as useful for flexibility, and it advises caution on rural and mountain roads, at night and in isolated areas. A hired driver or a prearranged transfer can be more suitable when you are unfamiliar with local driving, expect to drink, want to avoid route-finding and parking, or mostly need point-to-point trips.

Some long-stay visitors weigh buying or leasing a car as well. Those are separate decisions with their own paperwork, so the rest of this post stays with rental terms and what to confirm in writing.

How Monthly And Long-Term Rentals Work In Jamaica

Jamaican operators handle long stays in different ways, and the published terms show how far apart they can be. The following examples are each operator's own published terms from its website, not a standard.

Long-term terms published by individual operators

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

OperatorWhat it published
HummingBird Car RentalMonthly, six-month and year-long arrangements; minimum one month; up to 50 percent off daily rates for rentals over 30 days; rate starting from US$12 per day; US$200 deposit; free delivery and pickup; servicing and repairs handled; prices may change at renewal
We Rent AutoRentals of 30 days or more qualify for its long-term rate; insurance, routine maintenance and daily support described as included; extension or vehicle switch possible; custom quote, no fixed monthly price shown
Hertz JamaicaCustomers needing a car for more than a month asked to request an extended-term rate from an agent
Dumore EnterprisesDaily, weekly, monthly and lease arrangements; insurance, unlimited mileage, emergency service, vehicle replacement and maintenance listed; 24-hour, seven-day emergency support
Cruise Lin Car RentalMonthly rental plans and unlimited mileage

A few patterns are worth noticing. Some operators rent by vehicle size category rather than a specific make and model. A rental renewed month to month may be priced differently from the first month. HummingBird states that tyre care and damage to the front edge of the car, especially from potholes, sit outside its regular maintenance. And a long-term rate may include maintenance without covering every repair or consumable, so read what "included" means.

A company that offers a monthly plan is not automatically the cheapest or the best fit. Jamaica Tourist Board guidance says rates vary by rental company, vehicle type and insurance, and it suggests contacting companies directly. A monthly quote should also not be worked out by multiplying a daily rate, unless the operator confirms that is how it prices the month.

The Licence Question For A Stay Of One Month Or More

For a stay of a month or more, your driving licence becomes part of the rental plan. The Road Traffic Act 2018 says a foreign driver's licence may be treated as a licence under the Act, but its validity ends at the earliest of three points: the licence expiry date, the holder's departure from Jamaica, or twelve months from arrival, with proof of entry. The Act also says a foreign licence, with or without an international driving permit, does not authorize the holder to carry passengers or goods for hire or reward.

Visit Jamaica gives country-specific visitor guidance. It says a valid foreign licence or country-issued permit can be used, the physical licence must be carried, North American licences may be used for up to three months per visit, United Kingdom licences for up to twelve months and Japanese licences for up to one month. It adds that an international licence is generally not required where the licence is in English.

The Island Traffic Authority publishes information for foreign licence holders who want a Jamaican licence, and the Jamaica Information Service states that a foreigner must have held a home-country licence for at least six years to apply. For a longer stay, our post on driving in Jamaica with a foreign licence covers the question in more depth.

What The Monthly Rate Really Includes

The rate on a long-term page is a starting point. Jamaica rental pricing commonly combines a base rate with taxes, insurance or waivers and charges for extras, and it changes with the vehicle category, the dates, the pickup location and the season. Jamaica Tourist Board guidance says weekly discounts may be available, which is why a monthly price should come from the operator rather than from a calculator.

Here is what to look for, item by item. Deposits differ widely: HummingBird displays a US$200 long-term deposit, Jrive states a refundable security deposit of JMD 25,000 with 15 percent GCT applying to quoted rates, and Fox Rent A Car says cash deposits are not accepted and describes credit-card authorizations based on the estimated rental cost and insurance deductible. Mileage is another: Dumore and Cruise Lin advertise unlimited mileage, while HummingBird's long-term page does not state an allowance, so it must be confirmed in the contract. Additional drivers may carry a daily surcharge, and Jrive says drivers must be listed before the rental begins because unauthorized driving can void insurance. Delivery and airport terms vary too; HummingBird advertises free delivery and pickup, and We Rent Auto advertises no airport surcharge.

How to compare two monthly quotes

Tap a step to follow along.

  1. Ask for the same terms from each companySame vehicle category, same dates, same insurance level, same driver count and the same return location.
  2. Get the total in writingInclude base rate, tax, protection, deposit or card hold, mileage, fuel rule and any delivery or airport charge.
  3. Check what "included" meansServicing, tyres, glass, lights, towing, replacement vehicle and roadside help should each be named.
  4. Compare the total, not the headline rateA low daily figure can sit beside a large deposit or an excluded repair cost.

Dated renter accounts give a rough sense of short rentals, such as about US$270 for three days including insurance, and about US$400 plus a US$200 deposit for another short rental. They are individual experiences, not standard Jamaican rates, and they say nothing about a month.

Deposits, Insurance, Mileage And The Terms That Change The Total

Insurance and support vary significantly by operator, so ask what each item costs and what each one leaves out. Fox Rent A Car at Sangster states that third-party liability is included when the vehicle is used according to the rental agreement and road law, and it publishes optional CDW at US$12 to US$14 per day, SCDW at US$18 to US$20 per day, theft waiver at US$10 to US$12 per day and windscreen, glass, lights and tyre protection at US$7 per day, with deductibles that depend on the vehicle category. These are Fox's published figures, and they are daily, so over a month the choices add up.

Jrive states that personal accident coverage is not included unless arranged separately, that full cover may cost extra, and that insurance can be voided by unauthorized drivers, prohibited use or driving under the influence. A foreign credit card or personal policy may not cover Jamaica at all. Fox, for example, accepts some foreign insurance or credit-card coverage only with written proof naming Jamaica, the coverage type, the maximum amount and the rental duration. Our guide to car rental insurance in Jamaica walks through those documents.

Other surprises to watch for on a long rental include early-return terms that may not produce a refund, cancellation terms that differ from extension terms, extra charges for young drivers, delivery, cleaning or late return, and toll payments that sit outside the rental invoice. On class names, higher-end categories differ between companies, and a label does not promise a particular model, so ask what vehicle class, features and deposit apply. For a month-long stay, a higher class only pays off if you will use the extra comfort or space often enough to justify the higher total.

When Self-Driving Makes Sense And When A Driver Is Better

Renting suits a long stay when you make frequent independent trips, your accommodation is outside a convenient transfer corridor, you want control over departure times and stops, and you are comfortable driving on the left. It works best when you can manage route-finding, parking, fuel, tolls and local road conditions, and when the monthly quote stays reasonable after insurance, deposit, fuel, tolls and damage exposure.

A driver or transfer fits better when your main needs are airport, cruise-port, hotel or event transport, when you are unfamiliar with left-side driving or expect to drink, and when your routes include unfamiliar rural or mountain roads. It also fits one-way or occasional trips rather than daily access. Community accounts often describe first-time visitors finding the driving stressful and recommending a local driver for unfamiliar routes, though those are personal experiences and not a safety statistic.

The best plan for many long stays is a mix. Rent a car for the weeks of ordinary routine, and book a driver for the airport arrival, the mountain trip or the evening event. D-JARPS Transport Solutions offers car rentals alongside airport transfers and private charters, so you can ask about both in one conversation. If you are still undecided, our post on renting a car or booking a driver in Jamaica goes through the trade-offs.

Jamaican Roads, Toll Payments And Fuel For Rental Drivers

Jamaica drives on the left. Visit Jamaica describes major highways as modern toll roads and says rural and mountain roads can be winding and narrow. It gives 50 km/h in built-up areas and 80 km/h on highways, subject to posted signs. The Road Traffic Act requires seat belts for the driver and passengers, the prescribed child restraint for a child in the vehicle and restricts handheld phone use while driving.

A straight paved road running through tall green sugar cane fields toward distant hills, with a tiny truck far ahead.

Highway 2000 includes the East-West and North-South corridors. The Toll Authority of Jamaica publishes current rates and T-Tag information. On the East-West system the T-Tag is an electronic toll account that can be topped up online, and TransJamaican Highway says its sales offices accept cash, debit and credit cards while manual lanes accept cash only. On the North-South Highway, the company promotes an e-Pass with a stated 5 percent discount, and the Jamaica Information Service reported in August 2025 that all six toll plazas accepted debit and credit cards. Rates and methods change, so check the Toll Authority and the operator just before you travel.

For a rental, ask whether the car carries a T-Tag or e-Pass, whether tolls are paid directly or billed later, and whether an administration fee applies. Do not assume a rental company's electronic toll account can be used without permission. Fuel stations operate island-wide, attendants assist at service stations, and cards are widely accepted although carrying cash is sensible. Many contracts require the same fuel level at return as at pickup.

Check your plan

Pick an answer to check it.

1. When does the Road Traffic Act say a foreign licence stops being valid?

Show the answer

At the earliest of licence expiry, departure from Jamaica or twelve months from arrival. The Act sets the end of validity at whichever of those three points comes first, with proof of entry.

2. How should a monthly rental quote be worked out?

Show the answer

By asking the operator for a written total for your dates and terms. A monthly quote should not be calculated from a daily rate unless the operator confirms that method.

3. What can void a rental's insurance, according to Jrive's published terms?

Show the answer

Unauthorized drivers, prohibited use or driving under the influence. Jrive states that insurance can be voided by those three conditions.

Questions To Settle Before You Accept The Car

Before you sign, put your questions in a written message and keep the replies with your rental agreement. A long stay means any gap in the terms will come up sooner or later, so it is worth settling them at the start.

It is fair to ask for the rental licence. TPDCo says car rentals are a licensing category and that tourism entities must hold a Tourist Board licence, and licence status can be confirmed through TPDCo or the Jamaica Tourist Board.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best car rental option in Jamaica for a long stay?

There is no single best option. For a month or more, compare licensed operators that offer a monthly or extended-term rate, clear insurance terms, written deposit rules, servicing support and a suitable vehicle class. A monthly plan is not automatically the cheapest or the best fit.

Is renting a car in Jamaica a good idea for a month?

It can be, if you want independence, expect frequent trips and are comfortable driving on the left. A hired driver or transfer can be better if you are new to local driving, expect to drink or mostly need point-to-point trips.

Are higher-end car rentals worth it for a long stay?

Only if you will use the extra comfort or space enough to justify the cost. Include insurance excess, deposit, fuel, mileage, tyre and body damage terms, servicing and replacement arrangements in the comparison.

How much does it cost to rent a car for two weeks, or for a month?

There is no single market price. The total depends on the vehicle category, dates, pickup location, insurance, mileage, additional drivers, taxes, fuel and deposit. Ask the operator for a full written quote before payment.

Can I use my foreign driving licence for a whole month?

It depends on your country and your dates. Visit Jamaica gives up to three months for North American licences, twelve for United Kingdom licences and one month for Japanese licences, and the Road Traffic Act sets its own end points. Confirm the period with the Island Traffic Authority or the rental company.

Wrapping Up

A rental for a month or more is worth treating as a longer commitment than a short hire. Decide whether self-drive suits your stay, check that your licence covers every day, ask how extensions and servicing work, and compare the full written total across companies. A driver for part of the stay can cover the days you would rather not drive.

Taking the time to settle these terms at the start means fewer surprises at a counter, on the road or on your card statement later. You can also change your plan with confidence if your stay grows or shrinks.

D-JARPS Transport Solutions offers car rentals, airport transfers and private charters in Jamaica. We take requests by phone between 6 AM and 10 PM every day, or through the trip request form on our contact page, and we confirm the details and the price before the day.
