You have the flights, the rooms and maybe a rental car on hold, and one question is still open: can I drive in Jamaica with my US license, or does your UK or Canadian one need something extra? The short answer is that a valid foreign licence can often be used for private driving here, but the length of time it counts for depends on who you ask and where you come from. Jamaican law gives one period, the Jamaica Tourist Board gives another for visitors, and the rental company at the counter can set its own rules on top of both. That is why a licence that is perfectly good at home can still cause a delay at the desk. Jamaicans living abroad who come home for a few weeks, and visitors staying a month or more, are the ones most likely to run into this. The sections below set out each period side by side, what the rental counter will ask for, and what the roads feel like once you are driving. If you decide you would rather not drive at all, that is covered too.

Your foreign licence can be used for private driving in Jamaica

Section 41 of the Road Traffic Act 2018 treats a qualifying foreign driver's licence as a Jamaican licence. The licence stays subject to its own conditions and vehicle class, so a car licence lets you drive a car and nothing larger. The Act also recognises an international driving permit issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention for someone who does not live in Jamaica.

For most visitors from the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, the Jamaica Tourist Board says an international permit is generally not needed when the home licence is in English. If your licence is in another alphabet, the rental companies ask for a permit alongside it, and some also want the original licence kept with the permit. Either way, you carry the physical licence. The Jamaica Tourist Board says a photocopy or a picture on your phone is not accepted.

One limit matters if you are thinking of earning money on the road. The Act says a foreign licence does not authorise you to drive passengers or goods for hire or reward, even with a permit.

The clock ends at the earliest of three dates

Under the Act, your foreign licence counts as a Jamaican licence until the earliest of three things: the licence expires, you leave Jamaica, or 12 months pass from the day you arrived. For that 12-month count you need proof of entry, so keep your passport stamp or arrival record somewhere safe.

The Jamaica Tourist Board puts the visitor rules in terms of time per visit. Read the two together and do not merge them into one number.

AuthorityPeriod stated
Road Traffic Act 2018, section 41Until the earliest of licence expiry, your departure, or 12 months after arrival with proof of entry
Jamaica Tourist Board, North American visitorsUp to three months per visit
Jamaica Tourist Board, UK residentsUp to 12 months

If you are staying three months or less, the two sets of guidance agree and you have little to worry about beyond the rental company's own rules. If your stay is longer, confirm the period that applies to you with the Island Traffic Authority before you rely on a foreign licence for the whole time. Do the same if your licence expires while you are in Jamaica, because a licence that runs out mid-trip stops counting on its expiry date, and a rental company will want it valid for the entire rental.

People who move back to Jamaica or stay long term usually need a Jamaican licence instead. The Act allows a foreign licence holder to apply to the Island Traffic Authority for one, and Tax Administration Jamaica handles payment and issuing at its tax offices. The published requirements differ on how long the foreign licence must have been held, so ask the Island Traffic Authority for the current checklist before you start the application.

The rental counter asks for more than the law does

Even when the law says your licence is fine, the rental company decides who gets the keys. Their terms are written for their own insurance and risk, so they are usually stricter than the Act. Here is how a few Jamaican operators describe their rules in their published terms.

Licence and age rules at some Jamaican rental companies

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Rental companyWhat its terms say
Avis JamaicaLicence from your country of residence, valid for the whole rental, first issued at least one year before
We Rent AutoMinimum age 25, full licence held for at least one year, passport or government ID, major credit card
Zoom Rentals, KingstonValid licence held for at least two years; deposit by credit card only
Chalis Car RentalsCanadian, US and international licences accepted; minimum age 23

Notice how the years differ. A licence you passed last spring might meet the law and still not meet a company's one-year or two-year rule. Most also want a major credit card in the driver's name, and a few want your passport as well as a government ID. Our guide to car rental requirements in Jamaica covers the documents, age and deposit in more detail.

Ask the company two questions before you travel. First, does it accept your licence as it is, or does it want an international permit too? Second, what do you need to carry on the day, original licence, passport, card and booking confirmation? Get the answer in writing, so the person at the desk on your arrival day is working from the same page you are.

A rental has costs beyond the daily rate

The daily rate is only the start. Most Jamaican rental quotes combine a base rate with protection, a deposit or card hold, fuel rules, an extra-driver fee, airport or delivery charges and taxes. Rates move with the vehicle, the dates, the season and how long you keep the car, so ask for a written total for your exact dates.

The card hold is the part that surprises people. Each operator sets its own, and these are their figures, not a Jamaica-wide price. Enterprise at Montego Bay lists a card authorisation of USD 2,000 for economy, compact and intermediate cars, USD 2,500 for standard cars, SUVs and vans, and USD 3,000 for full-size cars when you decline its coverage and have no acceptable cover of your own. Fox Rent A Car at Sangster International lists an extra USD 2,000 to USD 3,000 in the same situation. Finalrentals lists a refundable USD 500 deposit, and Europcar's Jamaica terms list a USD 1,000 deposit and an airport surcharge of 13 percent of the base rate.

A deposit is a hold on your card, not insurance. Cover for damage is a separate question, and our explainer on car rental insurance in Jamaica walks through it option by option. Many companies also charge for an additional driver, so list everyone who may drive when you book. An unlisted driver can cancel your protection.

The first drive is easier when you know the road rules

Jamaica drives on the left. Under the Act you keep to the left when another vehicle is approaching or overtaking, and you overtake on the right. Roundabouts run clockwise, and you give way to traffic already on the roundabout. Most rental cars are right-hand drive, so the gearstick and the indicators will feel reversed for the first day.

Speed limits are set by signs, so read them. The Road Traffic Regulations 2022 set 80 km/h as the general maximum unless a speed-limit area, toll road or posted sign says otherwise, and school safety zones carry a 30 km/h limit. The Toll Authority of Jamaica lists 110 km/h for the East-West Highway 2000. Follow the lower limit wherever one is posted.

Seatbelts are required for the driver and relevant passengers, and the driver is responsible for passengers wearing theirs. Children must be in the prescribed child restraint. You may use a phone only hands-free, and you may not view, send or compose messages while driving.

Is driving in Jamaica difficult? It can be demanding if you normally drive on the right. Roads range from controlled-access toll highways to narrow, uneven rural roads, and the Jamaica Tourist Board advises caution, obeying signs and speed limits, avoiding isolated areas at night, and staying in the car if it breaks down. Many drivers settle in after a day or two on main roads in daylight. Save the winding country routes and any night driving until you are comfortable.

Renting yourself or booking a driver depends on your plans

Driving yourself gives you freedom to change plans. It suits you if you will make several stops over many days, want to reach places off the usual transfer routes, are comfortable on the left, and can handle route-finding, parking and the card hold. A driver or transfer tends to suit you better when you mostly need the airport, a hotel, an event or a cruise port, when you are staying at one resort, or when you expect to travel after dark or on roads you do not know.

You can also split the trip: a driver for the airport arrival while you are tired from the flight, then a rental car for the days you want to roam. Our guide to renting a car or booking a driver in Jamaica sets out the questions that settle it for your itinerary.

Which way suits your trip

Rent and drive

several independent daytime trips, comfortable on the left, parking confirmed

Book a driver

airport arrival, one resort, evenings out, unfamiliar or rural roads

Do both

a driver on arrival day, a rental only for the days you plan to roam

Tolls, fuel and the return are settled in the agreement

Highway 2000 includes the East-West and North-South toll roads. Tolls depend on the vehicle class and the plaza, and you can pay in cash or with a prepaid tag on some roads. Ask the rental company whether the car has a tag, how tolls are billed, and whether it adds a processing fee. Zoom Rentals says tolls are paid in cash at the booth, so keep some cash with you.

Fuel is normally your cost. Companies commonly ask you to return the car at the fuel level you received. Enterprise lists three choices: prepaid fuel with no refund for what is left, company refuelling at a higher rate per gallon than local pumps, or returning the car full. Confirm which one applies to your booking, and also whether mileage is unlimited and whether a one-way return is allowed.

Settle these questions before you leave home

Most licence problems are easy to fix from home and hard to fix at the counter. A short list, done a week or two before you fly, covers most of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drive in Jamaica with my US license?

Yes, a valid US licence can generally be used for private driving. The Road Traffic Act 2018 allows up to 12 months from arrival, ending sooner if the licence expires or you leave, while the Jamaica Tourist Board says North American visitors may use theirs for up to three months per visit. Confirm the period that applies before a longer stay.

Do I need an International Driving Permit in Jamaica?

The Jamaica Tourist Board says a permit is generally not required when your licence is in English. Rental companies can set their own rules, and they ask for a permit when the licence is not in the Roman alphabet, so check with yours.

What side of the road do they drive on in Jamaica?

The left. Keep left, overtake on the right, and give way to traffic already on a roundabout, which runs clockwise.

What is the speed limit on the highway in Jamaica?

The Toll Authority lists 110 km/h for the East-West Highway 2000. The general maximum is 80 km/h unless a sign, speed-limit area or toll road sets a different limit, and the lower posted limit applies.

Is driving in Jamaica difficult?

It can be, if you are used to driving on the right. Roads vary from toll highways to narrow rural lanes, and night driving is harder on unfamiliar roads. Start with daytime trips on main roads.

What if I stay longer than my licence allows?

Ask the Island Traffic Authority how to apply for a Jamaican licence, and confirm its current checklist before you start.

What This Means for You

A valid US, UK or Canadian licence can usually be used for private driving in Jamaica, but the length of time depends on the rule that applies to you: up to 12 months under the Act, three months per visit for North Americans under Tourist Board guidance. Your rental company can ask for more, from a licence held for one or two years to an international permit when the licence is not in English or another Roman-alphabet language. And once you are behind the wheel, keep left, read the signs and take the first drive in daylight.

Sorting this out before you fly saves time at the counter and avoids surprises on a longer stay. You will also know whether the roads and left-side driving suit you, or whether a driver would make the trip calmer.

If you would rather have someone else take the wheel for part of your trip, D-JARPS Transport Solutions can help in Jamaica. We run our own vehicles, with airport shuttle transfers and car rentals among our services, and we arrange transport anywhere in Jamaica as each trip needs it. Trips are arranged by phone between 6 AM and 10 PM every day, or you can send your details through the trip request form on our contact page, and we give you the price and confirm the trip before the day.
