Calm harbour seen from a hillside with a large ship far off at a pier and green coast beyond

You have a few hours in port, a group that wants to see more than the pier, and a ship that will leave on schedule whether everyone is back or not. That is the real question behind Falmouth cruise port transportation for a group: not just how to get to a beach or a waterfall, but how to be back at the gangway with time to spare. A private vehicle for your own group gives you control of the day, but only if the plan starts from the ship's departure time and works backward. The steps below follow the order an organiser usually works in, from matching the vehicle to the headcount, through choosing stops, to writing the return into the booking.

Choose the Day Around the Ship's All-Aboard Time

The all-aboard time is the deadline for being back on the ship, not the time you should start driving toward the port. The ship's daily schedule and gangway notices control the real deadline, so check them on the day. How much help you get if you run late depends on how you travelled. Royal Caribbean says the ship will wait for guests on a Royal Caribbean shore excursion if the tour is delayed, and that it will not wait for guests travelling independently. Its brochure says guests should be back onboard no later than 30 minutes before scheduled departure. Carnival says its own excursions come with a guarantee that the ship will remain until guests return, that it is not aware of independently booked excursions, and that independent passengers are responsible for returning on time.

A private charter is an independent booking in that sense. If your group is late, the ship may leave without you, and you could have to arrange your own way to the next port and cover the costs. The exact consequences depend on the cruise line and itinerary. So, write the all-aboard time at the top of your plan, count back from it, and keep a real buffer.

Pick One Main Experience and Build the Route Backward

For a day ashore, the sun is strong and stops near the water are common, so pack a mineral sunscreen, a waterproof phone pouch and a pair of flip flops for beach or river stops.

Quiet old town street with painted two storey buildings and a shaded arcade, empty, no signs

Choose one main experience, or a compact cluster of stops close together, instead of trying to fit everything in. Start with what you can reach on foot. The port village at Falmouth is walkable, and the historic town sits just outside the gated terminal. Visit Jamaica describes walking tours and a trolley service from the port. If your group would be happy with the shops, restaurants, crafts and the historic Georgian district, you may not need a vehicle at all. Beaches, Dunn's River Falls, Montego Bay and most other attractions do need transport.

Then pick a destination and count backward. Published one-way driving times from Falmouth include about 15 to 20 minutes to Martha Brae rafting, about 10 minutes to Luminous Lagoon in one operator's port guide, and about 30 minutes to Montego Bay in a Jamaica Tourist Board guide. The same board's guide places Falmouth about 45 minutes from Ocho Rios in ordinary conditions. For Dunn's River Falls, one operator gives about 30 minutes from the port and another gives 60 to 75 minutes. The difference reflects the exact destination, route and traffic, which is why you should ask your operator for an estimate based on your stop and the day you sail.

Ocho RiosAbout 45 minutes (Jamaica Tourist Board guide)
Dunn's River FallsAbout 30 minutes in one operator's table; 60 to 75 minutes in another guide

These are planning estimates, not promises. Rain, roadworks, traffic, crashes, event traffic, terminal queues, security checks, attraction lines and the ship's own disembarkation process can all stretch the day.

How a Private Group Charter Works at a Jamaican Cruise Port

A charter is a vehicle hired as a whole for an agreed period or itinerary, usually with a driver, rather than a seat sold to each passenger. Jamaica's Transport Authority calls this a contract carriage: a vehicle carrying passengers for hire under a contract for the vehicle as a whole at an agreed rate or sum. It must not stand or ply for hire in public view unless the place is designated for that purpose. Start with your headcount and match the vehicle to people and bags together.

Published operator examples show the range. Jamaican Treasures lists a 12-seater van, a 14-seater Hi-top Deluxe van and a 25-seater bus, and says the driver seat counts toward capacity. SunVillas lists a Coaster that takes 25 adults and one driver without luggage, or about 15 people with luggage. JMD Transport and Haulage publishes a Toyota Coaster charter with a stated capacity of 29 passengers. Because a cruise group often carries day bags, beach gear and shopping, ask each operator whether the capacity drops when bags are loaded and whether a second vehicle makes sense for a larger group. For more on charter steps, our guide to how to charter a bus in Jamaica walks through them in order, and what size bus your group needs covers seat counts.

Set the Meeting Point Before You Sail

This is the step most worth doing in writing. Pickup rules differ by port, cruise line, terminal and operating day, and there is no single public rule for every private vehicle at every Jamaican terminal. At Falmouth, Visit Jamaica describes a gated port village with a dispatch area for booked tours. Tour listings show that independent operators may use a designated independent-operator area, an approved pickup area, a holding area or a meeting point outside the secure port zone. Ask your operator exactly where the driver will be, whether the vehicle may enter the controlled port area, and what the backup meeting point is if the ship changes berth or passengers leave by a different gate. Confirm the arrangement with the terminal or cruise line if you need to.

Falmouth, Jamaica, by the way, is a docked port with a purpose-built pier, so passengers walk off the ship and do not tender ashore. It is not the Falmouth in Cornwall, which has separate tendering arrangements.

What Changes the Charter Cost

Instead of one number, think about what moves the price: vehicle type and capacity, the number of passengers and luggage space, the number of hours and whether they include waiting, pickup and return port, distance and number of stops, and fuel, tolls, parking and port access charges. Driver overtime, late-night work, meals, attraction admissions, guide services and child equipment can change it too, as can one-way versus round-trip service, cancellation terms, deposits, the date, demand and whether you need more than one vehicle. Our post on what changes the cost of a bus charter covers these drivers in more depth.

Published figures from named operators show different structures. These are each operator's own figures and not a Jamaican rate.

Jamaican Treasures (displayed October 2026)12-seater van with driverUS$150 per day, eight hours per day, four-day package minimum, gas and gratuity extra
Jamaican Treasures (displayed October 2026)14-seater Hi-top Deluxe van with driverUS$190 per day, same terms
Jamaican Treasures (displayed October 2026)25-seater bus with driverUS$235 per day, same terms
Sharp Travel (2025 schedule)Nine-seat van, 10-hour full dayUS$340, with parking, tolls and a driver meal listed
Sharp Travel (2025 schedule)14 to 20-seat Coaster, 10-hour full dayUS$460, with parking, tolls and a driver meal listed
Sharp Travel (2025 schedule)45-seat bus, 10-hour full dayUS$515, with parking, tolls and a driver meal listed

Look at the terms beside each number. A four-day minimum is not a one-day cruise price, and a figure that includes tolls and parking is not the same as one that leaves them out. A good quote for a cruise-day group states the currency, inclusions, hours, vehicle capacity, luggage assumptions and any extra charges.

Compare Falmouth, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Port Royal by Access and Distance

Jamaica's main cruise ports are Falmouth, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Port Royal. "Which port is better, Falmouth or Montego Bay?" has no single answer; it depends on what your group wants to do and which port your ship calls at. Falmouth suits historic Falmouth, Martha Brae rafting, Luminous Lagoon and central north coast attractions. Montego Bay is better placed for Doctor's Cave Beach, the Hip Strip, Rose Hall and western Jamaica. At Ocho Rios, Visit Jamaica puts Dunn's River Falls about five minutes from the port, Konoko Falls about five to ten minutes, and Reggae Hill about 15 minutes. Port Royal is near Kingston, and travel time to Kingston attractions varies a lot with traffic and the exact destination.

Whichever port you use, follow the ship's or terminal's instructions to the designated transport area, then meet your prebooked vehicle at the confirmed location.

Confirm the Vehicle, Licence and Passenger Capacity

Before you pay, ask the operator which licence the vehicle operates under. The Transport Authority says contract carriage applicants must provide vehicle details including make, model and seating capacity, and that a driver must hold the required identification badge. The seats should match the licensed vehicle and the capacity the operator states, and passengers should not be placed beyond the permitted seating arrangement or in luggage areas. The Road Traffic Act 2018 and the 2022 Regulations took effect on February 1, 2023, and they include seat-belt and vehicle-safety provisions. The National Road Safety Council explains that belt requirements differ by vehicle category.

On driver working time, ask the operator to state hours, overtime, rest and any overnight arrangements in the quote. JUTC also offers charter services, tours and event shuttles through a customer portal for charter bookings, so it is another route to compare.

Protect the Return Trip With a Written Plan

Ask for written confirmation before sailing. It should name the cruise line, ship, port, date and ship schedule, and the pickup location or gate. It should include the driver's name, vehicle description, operator identification and phone number, plus your passenger count, children and luggage against the vehicle's capacity. It should list the pickup time, the latest planned return time, every stop and whether the driver stays with the group at attractions. It should say what is included: fuel, tolls, parking, port fees, taxes, guide services, admission, driver meals and gratuity. Add the deposit, currency and payment method, cancellation and refund terms, and what happens if the ship docks late, disembarkation is delayed, weather closes the port or the all-aboard time changes. Ask what happens if the vehicle becomes unavailable, and whether the quote is per vehicle or per passenger.

Then build the clock, working through it in this order.

Set the return timeline

Tap a step to follow along.

  1. Find the deadlineTake the all-aboard time from the ship's schedule, and move it earlier by the cruise line's guidance, such as Royal Caribbean's 30 minutes before departure.
  2. Add your bufferAllow time for traffic, terminal security, walking from the vehicle to the ship and anything unexpected.
  3. Subtract the driveUse a published estimate as a starting point, then ask the operator for the time from your actual stop.
  4. Set the last stopChoose a latest departure from the final stop that leaves the buffer intact.
  5. Share itGive the driver and one named person in the group the same times.

Check your cruise-day plan

Pick an answer to check it.

1. Will the ship wait for a group that travels independently?

Show the answer

No, Royal Caribbean says it will not wait for guests travelling independently. Carnival likewise says independent passengers are responsible for returning on time.

2. Is Falmouth, Jamaica a tender port?

Show the answer

No, it is a docked port with a purpose-built pier. The Falmouth with separate tendering arrangements is the one in Cornwall.

3. Where should the meeting point be confirmed?

Show the answer

In writing with the operator before you sail. Pickup rules can differ by port, cruise line, terminal and operating day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Falmouth walkable from the cruise port?

The port village is walkable, and Falmouth's historic town is just outside the gated terminal. Visit Jamaica describes walking tours and a trolley service. Beaches, Dunn's River Falls, Montego Bay and most other attractions need transport.

Which port is better, Falmouth or Montego Bay?

Neither is better for everyone. Falmouth suits the historic town, Martha Brae and Luminous Lagoon, while Montego Bay is closer to Doctor's Cave Beach, the Hip Strip and Rose Hall. Your choice depends on your activity and the ship's schedule.

Is Falmouth a tender port?

No. Falmouth, Jamaica has a purpose-built pier where ships dock.

How close is Falmouth to Ocho Rios?

The Jamaica Tourist Board's guide puts it at about 45 minutes in ordinary conditions. Traffic and the exact destination can change that.

What can we do in Falmouth without an excursion?

You can stay in the port village for shops, restaurants, crafts and entertainment, take a guided trolley or walking tour, or visit the historic Georgian district. Arrange transport in advance for beaches or attractions outside town.

How do we book a vehicle for the group?

Send the operator your ship, port, date, all-aboard time, headcount, luggage, stops and a phone number, then ask for a written quote and confirmation.

Final Thoughts

A cruise day with your own vehicle works when the plan is built from the ship's all-aboard time. Match the vehicle to people and bags, choose one main stop or a close cluster, confirm the meeting point in writing, and leave a buffer at the end. Keep in mind that independent groups are responsible for returning on time, and that published drive times are estimates, not promises.

With a clear timeline and a written plan, the group can enjoy the day without watching the clock.

At D-JARPS Transport Solutions, we run our own vehicles and arrange transport anywhere in Jamaica as each trip needs it, including private charters for groups. We take requests by phone from 6 AM to 10 PM every day, or through the trip request form on our contact page. Send us your ship, date, all-aboard time, headcount, luggage and stops, and we will go over the details, give you the price and confirm the trip before the day.

Terms in this guide

Choose a term to see what it means.

All-aboard time
The deadline for being back on the ship. It is not the time you should start driving toward the port.
Independent booking
A trip you arrange yourself instead of through the cruise line. A private charter is one. If your group is late, the ship may leave without you.
Shore excursion
A tour sold by the cruise line. Royal Caribbean says the ship will wait for guests on its own excursion if the tour is delayed.
Charter
A vehicle hired as a whole for an agreed period or itinerary, usually with a driver, rather than a seat sold to each passenger.
Contract carriage
The Transport Authority's term for a vehicle carrying passengers for hire under a contract for the vehicle as a whole at an agreed rate or sum.
Tender port
A port where passengers do not simply walk off at a pier. Falmouth, Jamaica is not one: it is a docked port with a purpose-built pier.
Coaster
A type of passenger vehicle. One operator lists a Coaster that takes 25 adults and one driver without luggage, or about 15 people with luggage.
