You know your headcount. What you do not know is whether to book a van, a minibus, a Coaster or a full coach, and the worry runs in two directions. Book too big and you pay for empty seats. Book too small and you arrive at the pickup to find that some people, or their bags, do not fit. The number printed in a listing is only part of the answer, because the number that matters is passengers plus their actual luggage and equipment. If you have been searching how many seats in a minibus in Jamaica, you will find that the answer changes from model to model. Below, we turn a headcount and a bag count into a vehicle size to request, and lists the questions that make a quote match the group.

Start With Your Passenger Count

It is tempting to book the largest vehicle on offer so nobody is left behind. That is the quickest way to pay for seats nobody uses, and a bigger bus is not always better on the road either. Start from the real count: adults, children, anyone travelling with a stroller, walker or car seat, and a driver if the listing counts one.

A 14-seat vehicle does not necessarily carry 14 travellers plus 14 large suitcases comfortably. So, the booking number is the passengers travelling with their actual bags and equipment. Write that down first, then look at vehicles. Once you have it, you can compare options without being swayed by a listing that says "up to 25."

Jamaican transport research identifies the common Jamaican minibus as a 15-seat Toyota HiAce, which is a useful reminder that the everyday minibus is smaller than many people expect. For a family trip with a lot of luggage, our post on renting a van or minibus for a big family trip covers the choice from the renter's side.

What Fits in a Hiace, Coaster or Larger Coach

Here is what the published sources say, side by side.

Published seat counts and what to ask

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

Toyota Hiace Commuter DX15 seatsExact model and luggage room; Toyota Jamaica lists no luggage volume
Toyota Hiace Commuter DX, high roof, long wheelbase16 seatsExact model and luggage room
Toyota Hiace Commuter GL14 seatsHigh-back reclining seats listed; ask about bags
Toyota HiAce, Australian people-mover rangeUp to 12 seatsIts cargo figure applies to the van grade, not the passenger layout
Toyota Coaster Standard22 seatsToyota says all models have luggage racks
Toyota Coaster brochure layout22 seats including the driverAsk whether the driver is counted
Larger touring coachesVaries by model and layoutAsk about underfloor bays, overhead racks and the actual vehicle

The Toyota figures come from Toyota Jamaica's Hiace page and from Toyota Australia's Coaster brochure. Seat counts are not interchangeable between countries or vehicle variants, so use them as a guide to the question, not the answer. Operators list their own variants too, such as a 13-passenger Hiace or a 26-seat Coaster.

As a rough practical comparison: up to about 13 passengers suits a Hiace or similar van, with luggage checked separately; 14 to 16 passengers suits the relevant Hiace Commuter configuration, subject to the vehicle's licence; around 17 to 22 passengers is Coaster class; and more than 22 points to a larger coach or more than one vehicle.

The Transport Authority's licence information says stage and express carriage vehicles must have seating for no fewer than 11 passengers, and defines a contract carriage as a vehicle hired as a whole for an agreed rate. Its sample contract carriage application shows a Toyota Hiace recorded as a 14-seat minibus, which shows that licensed capacity is tied to the particular vehicle, not to the word "minibus." Read the licence types page for the categories, and ask the operator for the seating capacity recorded for your actual vehicle.

Luggage, Child Seats and Equipment Can Change the Vehicle

Luggage can reduce usable passenger capacity, especially in van-based vehicles. Ask whether bags go in a separate compartment, on overhead racks or in the passenger area. SunVillas' Coaster package page, for example, gives a 25 adult capacity without luggage and about 15 with luggage. Another Jamaican operator, Jamaican Treasures, describes a 25-seater bus that seats 18 comfortably with luggage. Both are examples from individual operators, and they show why the printed seat count alone is not enough.

Suitcases, duffel bags and boxes stacked on a covered veranda floor beside a folded child seat

Child seats take seating positions and may need a seat with a suitable belt arrangement, so state the number and type before the quote is issued. For anyone using a mobility aid, measure it folded and unfolded, and raise it directly with the provider. Do not assume a standard Hiace or Coaster can carry an occupied wheelchair. For airport or cruise port transfers, give the number of large suitcases, carry-on bags, strollers, car seats, walkers and other equipment. A vehicle that fits the headcount may still be too small for the group's cargo.

Ask the operator to confirm in writing that the proposed vehicle will carry the full list. The manufacturer pages do not give a Jamaica-specific luggage allowance for each Hiace or Coaster configuration, so the exact bag count and dimensions you supply are what let the operator answer properly.

One Bus or Two Smaller Vehicles Depends on the Route

Two smaller vehicles can be more practical when passengers start at different addresses, when the route has several pickup points, or when the final destinations split in different directions. They can also suit narrow, winding, steep or poorly lit roads. The Jamaica Tourist Board describes some rural and mountain roads as winding, bumpy and narrow, as the vehicle rental and transportation page notes. A smaller vehicle may reach a property, church, school, event venue or rural pickup point more easily.

Two vehicles also let one group leave while another finishes, and they let you separate passengers with different schedules, luggage or return times. The tradeoffs are two drivers, two vehicles, separate loading, possible coordination trouble, and a quote that may not be cheaper than one larger vehicle. Compare the full route and schedule, not only the seat count.

If you want the whole process, how to charter a bus in Jamaica, step by step takes you from first enquiry to the day of travel.

A Jamaican Charter Is Normally Quoted by Distance, Day or Package

Published operator terms show several common models. McIntyre Transport and Technology Services lists a 13-person Toyota Hiace at US$6 per kilometre, an executive 13-person Hiace at US$9 per kilometre and a 26-seat Toyota Coaster at US$12 per kilometre; its page does not state a complete policy on waiting time, overnight driver accommodation, cancellation or tolls. SunVillas Jamaica lists a 12-seat van package, a 15-seat deluxe van package and a 25-seat Coaster package, which include a vehicle, driver, airport pickup, one tank of gas and taxes. Its Coaster page says the driver is available 10 hours a day including driving and waiting, that extra hours are negotiated with the driver, that additional gas is the client's responsibility, and that Kingston to Ocho Rios highway tolls are excluded. Jamaica Quest Tours publishes a Coaster category for 13 to 20 persons with a driver or guide for eight hours per day; check its page for current rates.

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company lists Coaster, minibus and taxi sub-franchise routes on its site, but that is a route licensing page and not a set of private charter terms. If you want a JUTC charter, ask JUTC directly for a quotation.

Whatever the pricing model, ask for these in writing: the exact vehicle type and licensed seat count; whether the driver's seat is in the advertised number; headcount including children; luggage, strollers, car seats and mobility aids; every pickup point and destination; pickup order and times; flight or cruise details; the number and length of stops; whether pricing is one-way, round trip, hourly, daily or per kilometre; driver hours, waiting time and the overtime rate; fuel, tolls and parking; overnight driver arrangements; taxes and gratuity; deposit and payment deadline; cancellation, rescheduling and no-show terms; what happens if the vehicle is unavailable; and the day-of contact.

What Drives the Price of Group Transport

A price moves with the vehicle size and passenger capacity, the exact vehicle type (a standard Hiace, an executive Hiace or a Coaster), distance, the number of hours or days, driving and waiting time, airport pickup and return, fuel beyond any included amount, highway tolls, extra stops and route changes, overnight or multi-day driver arrangements, taxes and gratuity, and season, availability and the number of vehicles needed.

These are dated operator figures, taken from pages published in October 2026. They are separate operator figures. Do not average them or treat them as a Jamaica-wide tariff.

So, what about a 20, 40 or 50 seater? "How much is a 20 seater mini bus?" and "how much does a 50 seater coach cost?" both need a route-specific quote based on distance, hours or days, season, stops and driver requirements. The McIntyre 26-seat Coaster rate is one operator's figure, not a market price for a 20 seater. Ask for a quote tied to your route and date rather than relying on a number you found online. And "how much for a Hiace bus in Jamaica?" has the same answer: the McIntyre and SunVillas figures above show how those two operators quote, not what you will be charged.

For more on how those quotes break down, see our post on what changes the cost of a bus charter.

Routes, Roads, Airports and Cruise Ports Shape the Choice

Visit Jamaica publishes indicative driving times: Kingston to Mandeville is 98 kilometres, about 1.5 hours; Montego Bay to Negril is 83 kilometres, less than 1.5 hours; Montego Bay to Ocho Rios is 100 kilometres, less than 2 hours; Ocho Rios to Port Antonio is 97 kilometres, less than 2.5 hours; Ocho Rios to Kingston is 97 kilometres, less than 1.5 hours; and Port Antonio to Kingston is 109 kilometres, less than 2 hours. These are planning figures, not promises. Time changes with traffic, roadworks, weather, accidents, stops, pickup points, airport or cruise procedures, mountain roads and how many passengers board at different places.

On licensing and safety, the Transport Authority's 2025 contract carriage requirements state that a PPV driver or conductor must have a badge, and Jamaican public passenger vehicles can be recognised by a red plate and windscreen sticker. The Ministry says the Road Traffic Act 2018 and Road Traffic Regulations 2022 took effect on February 1, 2023, and the Act requires the driver to cause passengers to wear seat belts where it applies and requires children to use the prescribed child restraint system. Book only the approved seated capacity of the actual vehicle, and ask how long the driver can work, whether a second driver is needed and how overnight travel is handled.

The Written Booking Details Prevent Problems

Once you pick a size, put the decision on paper. A good booking record has the exact vehicle and licensed seat count, the headcount with children, the luggage list, the route and stops, the price basis, what is included and excluded, driver hours and waiting rules, the deposit and cancellation terms, the plan if the vehicle is unavailable, and contact details for the operator and for the day of travel.

Questions worth settling before you pay: Is a Hiace 14, 15 or 16 seats? Is the Coaster a 22, 25 or 26 passenger configuration? Can every pickup point be reached by one large vehicle? Would two smaller vehicles reduce waiting and backtracking? What happens if a flight or cruise is delayed? Is an overnight driver or second driver required?

Match the vehicle to the group

Pick an answer to check it.

1. What is the number that matters when choosing a vehicle?

Show the answer

Passengers together with their actual luggage and equipment. A listed seat count does not account for the bags and equipment the group is carrying.

2. Toyota's Coaster brochure layout lists 22 seats. What should you ask an operator?

Show the answer

Whether the driver is counted in the advertised seats. The brochure layout counts 22 seats including the driver, so the usable passenger count can be lower.

3. When might two smaller vehicles beat one large bus?

Show the answer

When there are several pickup points, narrow roads or split destinations. Smaller vehicles can reach awkward pickups and reduce waiting, though the quote may not be cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many seats are in a minibus?

There is no single universal capacity. Toyota Jamaica lists Hiace Commuter variants with 14, 15 and 16 seats, and a Jamaican transport research paper identifies the common Jamaican minibus as a 15-seat HiAce. Ask for the exact model, the licensed passenger capacity and whether the driver is counted.

How much is a 20 seater mini bus?

A Jamaican operator should quote it from the route, date, hours, distance, luggage, fuel, tolls and waiting needs. One published example is McIntyre Transport's 26-seat Coaster at US$12 per kilometre, which is that operator's figure and not a general market price.

How much is a 40 seater bus?

It needs a route-specific quote based on your distance, hours, stops and luggage, so request a quotation for your exact trip.

How much does a 50 seater coach cost?

It also needs a route-specific quote based on distance, hours or days, season, stops and driver requirements. Avoid relying on a figure that is not tied to your trip.

How much for a Hiace bus in Jamaica?

McIntyre Transport publishes US$6 per kilometre for a 13-person Toyota Hiace and US$9 per kilometre for its executive 13-person Hiace. SunVillas publishes package figures for a 12-seat van and a 15-seat deluxe van that include a driver, one tank of gas and taxes. These are those operators' own figures and should not be treated as a universal rate.

Moving Forward

Choosing a size comes down to a few steps: start from your real headcount, add the luggage and equipment, check what each seat count actually includes, and decide whether one vehicle or two will serve the route. Ask for the exact model, the licensed capacity and the usable seats with bags, and treat any published price as that operator's own figure.

Getting the size right the first time means you pay for the seats you use and nobody is left at the roadside with their bags. Write your headcount and bag list down, then send it to two or three operators.

D-JARPS Transport Solutions runs its own vehicles and arranges private charters across Jamaica as each trip needs it. Trips are arranged by phone from 6 AM to 10 PM every day, or you can send your group details through our contact page. We go over the details with you, give the price and confirm the trip before the day. You can read more about private charters first if that helps.
