You have asked three operators for a price and got three answers that do not look alike. One charges per kilometre, another quotes a daily package, and a third has a minimum number of days. Now you are trying to work out which is cheapest, and part of you is hoping someone will simply tell you the going rate for bus rental in Jamaica. There is no single going rate, but there is a way to read each quote so that the numbers become comparable. Below, we explain what moves the total, shows how some Jamaican operators publish their prices, and ends with a line-by-line method for putting two quotes side by side. Every figure here belongs to the operator that published it; none of them is an average or a market price.

Why Can Two Jamaica Bus Quotes Look So Different?

Two quotes can describe the same trip and still differ because they are built differently. A per-kilometre quote prices distance. A daily package prices a block of time, often with a set number of hours. Another may sit on a minimum number of days. Even when the vehicle is the same, one price might include fuel, tolls and taxes while another leaves them out.

When people ask "how much does a bus cost in Jamaica?", the honest answer is that there is no single Jamaica-wide charter price. Published operator examples vary by vehicle, route and rental period. The first step toward comparing is to stop looking at the headline and start looking at what sits under it: vehicle, capacity, route, hours, driver arrangements, included expenses, taxes, deposit and cancellation terms.

Ask each operator for the same itinerary, priced line by line, showing what is included and what is excluded. The sections below explain the lines.

What Should the Quote Start With: the Group, the Luggage and the Route?

A quote can only be as accurate as the trip you describe. Give the exact pickup and drop-off addresses, any airport or cruise port terminal details, the date and pickup time, the end time and return schedule, every planned stop, and whether the vehicle waits during activities. Add the passenger headcount, the luggage quantity and approximate size, and any accessibility or child-seat requirements. If you leave these out, the operator will assume, and the assumptions may not match your day.

Distance matters most when pricing is per kilometre, because longer routes produce more billable distance. The Jamaica Tourist Board publishes drive-time examples that show the scale: Kingston to Mandeville is 98 kilometres, about 1.5 hours; Montego Bay to Negril is 83 kilometres, less than 1.5 hours; Montego Bay to Ocho Rios is 100 kilometres, less than 2 hours; Ocho Rios to Port Antonio is 97 kilometres, less than 2.5 hours; Ocho Rios to Kingston is 97 kilometres, less than 1.5 hours; and Port Antonio to Kingston is 109 kilometres, less than 2 hours. These are approximate times, not promised schedules. Real timing can change with traffic, weather, roadworks, accidents, route choice, hotel access, airport or cruise port procedures, loading and stops.

Is Vehicle Size the Only Thing That Sets Capacity?

Not quite. The seat count in a listing is a starting point, and luggage changes the answer. SunVillas gives lower practical capacities when luggage is carried: 8 passengers in its 12-seater, 10 in its 15-seater and 18 in its 25-seater. So, a 25-seat label does not mean 25 people with bags.

Vehicle level matters too. McIntyre Transport lists a standard 13-passenger Hiace at US$6 per kilometre and an executive 13-passenger Hiace at US$9 per kilometre. Same seat count, different price, because the level of vehicle is different. Ask for the make, model or equivalent, the licensed seating capacity, and the practical capacity with your luggage. If you need help turning headcount into a size, what size bus your group needs walks through seat counts from a Hiace to a Coaster.

How Do Hours, Waiting and Overnight Travel Affect the Total?

Time is often the biggest swing in a bus quote. Jamaican Treasures provides eight hours per day, which may be split between morning and evening, with overtime negotiable. SunVillas publishes day, four-day and weekly package structures, and its Coaster page says the driver is available for 10 hours per day including driving and waiting time. Extra stops, delays, loading time and itinerary changes can lengthen the service period or the distance, so ask how each is treated.

Ask whether waiting during a tour, ceremony, excursion or meal counts as billable time, and whether the quoted hours are consecutive, split or reset each day. Ask what the overtime rate is. Ask what happens when the group is delayed by a flight, a ship disembarking or late passengers. Airport or cruise port pickups can be charged differently from hotel pickups, so confirm that too.

Overnight and multi-day trips add driver accommodation and meals. If they are excluded, they should be listed separately. For trips that run over several days, our post on multi-day tour transportation for groups goes into the planning.

Possible invoice extras include driver meals, driver accommodation, a fuel surcharge, tolls, parking, terminal fees, ferry charges, additional stops, overtime, waiting time, route changes, cleaning or damage charges, taxes, permits or entry fees, and child seats or other equipment. Jamaican Treasures says tips and gas are extra for its van service, while its weekly package includes a tank and requires the vehicle to be returned with a tank. SunVillas says its packages include the driver, one tank of gas and taxes, but not a suggested 15 percent driver gratuity, and lists a child seat at US$40 per week or US$6 per day.

What Do Published Jamaica Charter Prices Look Like?

These are dated operator examples. Each is that operator's own published figure. They are not averages, forecasts or recommended prices, and the packages carry different terms, so they are not interchangeable.

TranzCare (as listed October 2026)Hiace, 12 seatsDaily rates starting at US$220, subject to dates, seasonal availability and length of stay

Read the table with care. Jamaican Treasures' package is based on eight-hour days and a four-day minimum, while SunVillas' packages include a driver, airport pickup, one tank of gas and taxes. The TranzCare figure is a starting price whose final amount depends on dates and length of stay. If someone asks "what is the minimum price of a bus?", the lowest figure in this table is US$150 per day for a 12-seat van, and that is one operator's figure under one set of terms, not a general minimum. Asked "how much would it cost to rent a minibus for a day?", the same applies: use the table to learn how prices are shaped, not as a budget.

On the larger sizes: "what is the cost of a 40 seater bus?" The Jamaican examples above cover 13, 14, 15, 25 and 26 seat vehicles. A 40-seat quote has to be requested for the specific route, date, hours, luggage and stops. Do not average the smaller vehicles into an estimate.

What Should You Compare Line by Line Before Booking?

Use the same sheet for each operator so gaps are obvious. A lower headline quote can become more expensive after you add fuel, tolls, waiting, luggage capacity, overtime, driver lodging or taxes.

If one quote leaves a line blank, ask the operator to fill it in before you compare totals. A quote that includes fuel and tolls and another that does not are two different prices for two different promises.

What About Jamaica Licensing, Safety and Travel Time?

The Transport Authority is the government body that licenses Public Passenger Vehicles and commercial carriers. A contract carriage carries passengers for hire or reward under a contract for use of the vehicle as a whole at an agreed rate, and it must not stand or ply for hire in public view unless permitted. The Authority's licence types page lists a contract carriage licence with a new-licence fee of J$16,600 and a one-year duration. Its FAQs say a PPV driver badge is valid for two years after the requirements are satisfied, and its requirement sheet says a person operating a PPV as driver or conductor must have a badge. The operator should be able to confirm the vehicle's licence status and driver credentials.

The Road Traffic Regulations require the certificate of fitness, certificate of title and licence certificate to state the maximum number of persons, including the driver, that the vehicle is licensed to carry. They also say passengers must not be carried in numbers or in a way that blocks the driver's view. The Road Traffic Act, 2018 requires seat belt use for drivers and specified passengers, and the driver must make sure passengers wear them where the Act applies. A driving-hours rule located in the 2022 Regulations is directed at motor tractors and trucks, so ask the operator which rule applies to the exact bus classification and how long the driver can work.

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company lists charter services, tours and special trips among its services. Its charter availability, vehicle type and price should be confirmed directly. Travel time also affects price, so build a realistic schedule; the Visit Jamaica travel guide gives published drive times.

Which Questions Should You Put in Writing Before Paying a Deposit?

Before money moves, get answers in writing to the questions that most often cause disputes. Is the quoted seating capacity realistic once luggage is loaded? Is the bus licensed for the stated number of passengers, and are children counted as passengers for capacity? Is the driver included for the entire time or only for the transfers? Does the vehicle have enough luggage space for the full group? Are tolls, parking, terminal fees and attraction access fees included? Does a multi-day itinerary require driver lodging and meals? Is fuel included, capped or charged separately? What is the overtime rate?

Then the terms: what deposit secures the booking, what cancellation charge applies, how itinerary changes are approved, whether the quote is in Jamaican dollars or United States dollars, and whether taxes and gratuity are included. Ask whether the route involves toll roads or roads where a larger bus may take longer, what vehicle replaces the quoted one if it becomes unavailable, and what emergency contact is available on the day.

Check how you read a quote

Pick an answer to check it.

1. A Jamaican Treasures daily rate and a McIntyre per-kilometre rate cover the same trip. What do you do?

Show the answer

Ask both for a line-by-line quote on the same itinerary. The two use different billing models and terms, so only matching line items are comparable.

2. What does a published operator figure represent?

Show the answer

That operator's own figure under its own terms. Published figures are individual operator examples and not averages.

3. How do you find out the cost of a 40-seat bus?

Show the answer

Request a quote for your route, date, hours, luggage and stops. A 40-seat charter depends on route, date, hours, luggage and stops, so it needs its own quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bus cost in Jamaica?

There is no single Jamaica-wide charter price. Published examples vary by vehicle, route and rental period: McIntyre Transport lists US$6 per kilometre for a 13-passenger Hiace and US$12 per kilometre for a 26-seat Coaster, and SunVillas lists US$250 per day for a 25-seat Coaster package. These are individual operator figures, not market averages.

What is the minimum price of a bus?

The lowest published figure in these examples is Jamaican Treasures' US$150 per day for a 12-seat van with a driver, with eight-hour days and a four-day minimum on its package. That is that operator's figure, not a general minimum.

How much is the price for a bus?

It depends on whether the operator bills by kilometre, day, week, trip or another arrangement. Compare the billing model before comparing the numbers.

What is the cost of a 40 seater bus?

Ask for a quote for your specific route, date, hours, luggage and stops, and do not scale up a smaller vehicle's rate.

How much would it cost to rent a minibus for a day?

Published daily examples include US$150 for a 12-seat van, US$190 for a 14-seat Hi Top Deluxe van and US$235 for a 25-seat bus from Jamaican Treasures, and US$150, US$175 and US$250 for 12, 15 and 25 seat packages from SunVillas. These include different terms, so do not treat them as interchangeable.

The Bottom Line

What changes the cost of a bus charter is the trip itself: the vehicle and its level, the distance, the hours, the stops and waiting, the date, the luggage, any overnight stay, and what the operator includes. Quotes only line up when they cover the same itinerary and show the same lines, and every price you see belongs to the operator who published it.

Send the same itinerary to two or three operators, put their answers side by side, and ask the follow-up questions that fill any blanks. You will see quickly which quote is complete and which one is hiding costs.

D-JARPS Transport Solutions runs its own vehicles and arranges private charters across Jamaica as each trip needs it. Trips are arranged by phone from 6 AM to 10 PM every day, or you can send your itinerary through our contact page. We go over the details with you, give the price and confirm the trip before the day.
