The flights are booked, the bags are half packed, and one question keeps nagging: how does a baby get from the airport to the hotel safely after a long day of travel? A Jamaica airport transfer with a car seat is something you can settle weeks before you fly, and it is worth doing, because a tired family at the arrivals hall is a poor place to start asking whether a seat exists. You have three realistic routes. You can bring your own seat, ask the transfer operator to supply one, or sort something out at the airport. Each can work, and each has a different list of things to confirm. This guide sets out what Jamaican law says, how the options compare, what airlines publish about car seats and what to send an operator so nothing is left to chance.

Plan the Ground Leg Before You Land

The first road trip after landing is the part parents most often leave for later. It deserves earlier attention for simple reasons. Your baby has been up and down for hours, you may be carrying a stroller, a diaper bag and a car seat as well as suitcases, and the drive from the airport to your hotel can range from minutes to hours depending on where you are staying. A published planning estimate puts Montego Bay hotels at 5 to 15 minutes from MBJ, while Negril is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, and Kingston hotels are about 20 to 30 minutes from Norman Manley International Airport (KIN).

Those are published operator and tourism estimates, not promises. Traffic, rain, roadworks, immigration and baggage delays, school traffic and stops for feeding or changing all stretch the time. For a baby, a longer drive means more reason to know exactly which seat you will use and who installs it. Decide early whether you will bring your own seat or ask for one, and pick the airport that fits your resort, since MBJ and KIN serve different regions.

What Jamaican Law Says About Child Restraints, in Plain Language

Start with the Act. Section 73 of the Road Traffic Act 2018 says: "The driver of a motor vehicle that conveys a child shall cause the child to wear or be conveyed in the prescribed child restraint system." Section 73(2) provides that a driver who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offence. The Act defines a child restraint system as a restraint or device designed to reduce injury by limiting a child's movement during abrupt deceleration or a collision.

The Road Traffic Regulations 2022 add detail. Regulation 270(1) requires restraint systems and booster cushions to be installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. Regulation 270(5) prohibits installing a child restraint in the front seat of a vehicle that has an air bag. Regulation 270(6) requires installation that holds the restraint in place without stopping the child from breathing or unnecessarily restricting movement. Regulation 273 says that when a child's weight or height exceeds the limit for a forward-facing child restraint, a belt-positioning booster seat with a booster cushion shall be used. Restraints must also carry labels and written English instructions with recommended child weight and height (regulations 276 and 277).

The Jamaica Information Service reported that, for licensed public passenger cars and buses, children aged one to three could travel without restraint or restrained by an adult, with different options by age up to over nine. It also said an adult restraining a child should not sit in the front. Because the rule depends on the vehicle category and may change, ask the operator which category applies and what restraint it will use for your child.

Bring Your Own Seat or Ask the Operator to Supply One

Bringing your own seat gives you control over the model, condition, expiry, fit, harness adjustment and installation. It is especially useful if your child will use several vehicles. The cost is carrying it through the airport, protecting it if you check it and installing it in an unfamiliar vehicle. If you check it, a car seat travel bag keeps the straps and buckles together in the hold and gives you one handle to carry.

Requesting an operator's seat saves you the bulky carry, but it creates questions to settle before payment. Is the seat rear-facing, forward-facing or a booster? What are its height and weight limits? Does it have a current label and manufacturer instructions? Will it be installed before pickup, and will the driver let you inspect and adjust it? Does the vehicle have a working three-point belt or compatible anchorage? Is there a separate seat for each child? Is the model confirmed, or only subject to availability? Is the seat available for the return trip?

Operators publish different terms, and each of these is that operator's own statement:

  • Best Jamaica Tours: publishes complimentary child and infant seats on private airport transfers, asks for the number and ages of children and says seats are installed before the driver meets the passenger.
  • Reggae Tours Jamaica: publishes child seats free of charge subject to availability and asks you to request one and include the child's age.
  • Royal Passage Tours: publishes child seats on request at booking.
  • Jamaica Villa Transportation: publishes child or infant seats on request at US$10 per seat daily on its Ian Fleming transfer page.
  • Yaad Rides Jamaica: publishes car seats and driver installation training, and asks for the child's age and weight.

None of these is a Jamaica-wide rule. So, do airport transfers provide car seats? Some do, some charge, and some do not say. Ask, and get the answer in writing.

What to Confirm Before You Pay for the Transfer

A seat promise in a chat message is only useful if it is written down with the rest of the booking. Before paying, confirm each of these in writing.

Send the operator your names and a reachable phone or WhatsApp number, your flight itinerary, the airport and destination, each child's age, height and weight, the seat type and number, how many suitcases, carry-ons, strollers and cribs you have, and any feeding or changing stops you want. If you book a return transfer, add the return flight details. Operators match the vehicle to your party and bags, and a vehicle that is too small can mean a second vehicle and a fee, as at least one published operator's terms state.

If you are arranging an airport shuttle with D-JARPS Transport Solutions, the same list applies: tell us the details and we go over them, give you the price and confirm the trip before the day. Ask us what seat arrangements are possible for your date rather than assuming. For the booking steps in general, see how to book an airport shuttle in Jamaica.

Airline Rules for Flying With a Car Seat and Stroller

Airline policies differ, so check your airline's own page for checked and onboard use. The following are the published terms of five carriers.

What airlines publish about car seats

Tap a row to highlight it, or a column heading to sort.

AirlinePublished terms
American AirlinesOne stroller and one car seat may be checked free when travelling with a child; an aircraft-approved seat may be used onboard if the child has a purchased seat or an adjoining seat is available
Delta Air LinesStrollers and child safety seats are not counted as standard baggage and may be checked free; an approved seat may be used onboard if the child has a purchased seat or an open seat is available
Southwest AirlinesOne stroller and one car seat or child restraint may be checked free per ticketed customer travelling with a child
JetBlueOne stroller and one car seat; checking a child safety seat does not count toward the baggage allowance and has no fee
WestJetInfant equipment such as a restraint, playpen or stroller may be checked at the gate without charge for a lap infant; onboard restraints must meet Transport Canada or FAA approval

Is it free to bring a car seat on a plane? Airlines commonly allow one child car seat to be checked without a fee, but using it in the cabin needs a ticketed seat for the child and an aircraft-approved restraint. Rules vary by airline, aircraft and fare. Use a protective travel bag if you check the seat and inspect it when you collect it.

The Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority notes that children under two may travel on an adult lap but recommends an appropriate restraint, with guidance of rear-facing below 9 kg (20 lb) and forward-facing from 9 kg to 18 kg (40 lb). The airline's own policy controls acceptance and charges.

As for security screening, a car seat may need to go on the conveyor or be inspected separately, so allow extra time. TSA rules apply at United States airports, not on arrival in Jamaica.

Choosing Between a Transfer, an Airport Taxi and a Rental Car

A pre-booked private transfer gives you a reserved vehicle, planning around your destination, luggage assistance as published by some operators and the chance to get a confirmed seat. The trade-offs are payment and cancellation terms, operator-specific waiting limits and possible extra charges for seats, stops or a larger vehicle.

An airport taxi is available when you arrive. MBJ says transfer and tour operators are in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall, and the Jamaica Tourist Board says licensed vehicles display red PPV or white P plates, route details and Transport Authority driver identification. The trade-off is that a child seat is not assured unless you arranged one, and you should confirm the vehicle and fare before leaving.

A rental car gives you control and the freedom to stop for supplies, but you drive on the left on unfamiliar roads, install the restraint yourself and handle luggage and a baby at the airport. A rental company's child seat must be reserved and checked for condition, size and fit. Our post on car rental requirements in Jamaica covers documents and deposits.

What about Uber? Do not assume an app-based vehicle will carry the right seat. The driver or vehicle may not have the correct seat, installation or licensing status. Arrange a vehicle with a confirmed restraint, or bring your own.

MBJ, KIN and the Details Parents Often Miss

At MBJ, the airport says transfer and tour operators are located in the Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall after customs, and customer service representatives direct passengers to their hotel lounge or ground transportation company. At KIN, the Airports Authority of Jamaica describes the airport as about twenty minutes from Kingston's business centre, with bus, taxi and car rental options. Ask your operator where exactly the driver waits after customs, since the meeting point differs by operator.

Documents deserve a place on your list. Every child travelling internationally needs a valid travel document accepted for Jamaica, and PICA says travellers without one may be refused entry or delayed. For a child travelling with one parent, carry the child's passport, a birth certificate or other evidence of the parent-child relationship, a signed consent letter from the absent parent where possible, a copy of that parent's identification and any custody order or other document that explains the absence. PICA's passport rules require written parental consent for passport applications by unmarried persons under 18, and its document list refers to notarized letters in specified minor applications. Those rules are not identical to an airport-entry rule for every one-parent holiday, so confirm the current requirement with PICA, the Jamaican embassy and your airline. If a delayed flight is possible, what happens to your airport transfer when a flight is delayed is worth reading, and our guide to luggage in an airport shuttle helps you work out vehicle size with a stroller and a seat.

Is Jamaica baby friendly? It has family travel services, airport transfers, hotels and tourism facilities. A baby-friendly trip still needs advance planning for the road transfer, restraint, feeding and changing, luggage and the distance between the airport and your accommodation.

Check your plan

Pick an answer to check it.

1. What does section 73(1) of the Road Traffic Act 2018 require?

Show the answer

That the driver cause a child to wear or be conveyed in the prescribed child restraint system. Section 73(1) places the duty on the driver of a motor vehicle that conveys a child.

2. Where must a child restraint not be installed under regulation 270(5)?

Show the answer

In a front seat where the vehicle has an air bag. Regulation 270(5) prohibits installing a child restraint in the front seat of a vehicle with an air bag.

3. Can you assume an app-based ride has the right child seat?

Show the answer

No, confirm or bring your own. An app-based vehicle may not have the correct seat, installation or licensing status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do airport transfers provide car seats?

Some Jamaican transfer operators publish that they provide infant, child or booster seats, but availability, age and weight range, price and installation differ. Confirm the exact seat before you pay.

Is it mandatory to use car seats for children in Jamaica?

Section 73 of the Road Traffic Act 2018 requires the driver to cause a child to wear or be conveyed in the prescribed child restraint system. Different requirements were announced for licensed public passenger cars and buses, so the vehicle category matters.

How do you travel with a car seat at the airport?

A car seat can generally be checked at the ticket counter or gate, or taken on board if the child has a purchased seat and the seat is approved for aircraft use. Check the airline's policy and use a protective bag.

Do I need a notarized letter to travel with my child to Jamaica?

Carry the child's passport and proof of the parent-child relationship. A written consent letter from the absent parent is a sensible addition when a child travels with one parent or another adult. Confirm current requirements with PICA, the embassy and your airline.

Does a car seat go through a TSA scanner?

It may be screened or inspected separately, and you should follow the officer's instructions and allow extra time.

Wrapping Up

You can settle most of this before you fly: whether to bring or request a seat, what the law asks of the driver, what your airline allows and what to confirm in writing with the operator. If a seat is promised, ask for it in the booking confirmation, with the seat type and the child's details.

A short list sent early saves time at the arrivals hall. With the seat, the pickup point and the contact number agreed, the first drive is one thing you do not have to think about while you manage everything else a baby needs after a flight.

D-JARPS Transport Solutions arranges airport transfers in Jamaica with our own vehicles, and we go over each trip's details, give you the price and confirm the trip before the day. Tell us your flight, passengers, bags and each child's age, height and weight, and ask what is possible for your date. Trips are arranged by phone from 6 AM to 10 PM every day, or through the trip request form on our contact page. You can also read about our airport shuttle service.
